Drawing on BSU College of Arts and Sciences’ strengths in computer science, statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics, and other disciplines, DSI BSU is built to contribute to the development of advanced data science, train next generation of data scientists, and transform multiple sectors of the US economy through the application of data science benefiting the nation.
The interdisciplinary character of the data science institute strongly facilitates the development of new joint academic programs. Data science shows great applicability in almost all domains and the demand for qualified data scientists far exceeds the supply.
The Data Science Institute is an efficient instrument for exposing our students to future employers through its front office. The middleware contains a great wealth of advanced technologies for big data processing that can be deployed in-premises and in the cloud and educational material that can be used for online training in data science.
Finally, the DSI through its interdisciplinary approach significantly supports and boosts our research potential attracting the government and industrial funding across multiple areas including data analysis, pattern recognition and image processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, natural language processing, predictive modeling, computer vision, expert and decision support systems, neural networks and deep learning, AI in data collection, storage and retrieval that will pave the way to the new era in data science.
Usually data is raw, unorganized collections that need to be processed. When data is processed it is called information. The DSI will train high-level professionals in 3 major categories: Data Analysts (those who deal with analysis of data sets including cleaning and visualization), Data Engineers (those who are able to process big data sets using tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, etc.), Data Scientists (those who are capable of handling any job in the pipeline of data science). The students will participate in research while training. The back office of the DSI describes the faculty experience and the ongoing research projects.
Training and capstone projects
Training is performed over a wide range of data science and analytics. It will include data pre-processing, data visualization, machine and deep learning, data base management, information and decision support systems, big data analytics, cloud technologies, predictive modeling, etc. Capstone projects are focused on the ability to work with real data sets using Python, R, and other programming languages.
Research and applications
The world is being transformed by data and data-driven analysis is rapidly becoming an integral part of science and society. BSU Data Science Institute is a collaborative effort across many research groups. We strive to unite existing data science research initiatives and create interdisciplinary collaborations, connecting the data science and related methodologists with disciplines that are being transformed by data science and computation.
Applications include computer-based technologies, engineering, health related disciplines, etc.
Data Science Institute
The Data Sciences Institute (DSI) is a multi-divisional, multidisciplinary hub for data science activity at the Bowie State University. The DSI facilitates research connections, fosters innovation, and enhances teaching and learning in data sciences, including in emerging data-driven disciplines with a highly collaborative, inclusive approach. We bring together researchers and trainees from across the University, its affiliated research institutes, industry and beyond to support data sciences research, innovation, collaboration, and training to translate promising ideas into real-world solutions and advance the data sciences, themselves.
