The internship program at the Bowie State University
Students will learn: public health data with emphasis on privacy/security, data science of outbreak investigation, elements of epidemiology, public health analytics focusing on data cleansing and visualization, public health reporting (processing immunization records, electronic lab reporting, syndromic surveillance, etc.). The training (including hands-on seminars) will focus on public health emergency preparedness and response. Hands-on seminars will include multiple data streams processing (clinical data from electronic health records, lab results, immunizations, demographic data, environmental data, claims data, and data from other non – healthcare sources such as SDOH). Students will learn how to process big data, processing unstructured data, and working with cloud technologies. HL7® Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources is an important part of training as well as experience with programming languages (SAS, R, Python, SQL, etc). Experience with real data may be very important for getting gainful employment in healthcare and public health settings.
